Management of a permanent maxillary first molar with two disto buccal canals with the aid of spiral computed tomography: a case report

چکیده
Human molars show considerable anatomic variations with respect to number of roots and root canals. The most common form of the permanent maxillary first molar has three roots and four canals, two mesiobuccal canals and one distobuccal and palatal canal each. 98.3% of maxillary first molar have been reported to have a single distobuccal canal. Two canals were found only 1.7% of the time, hence showing the second disto buccal canal to being a rare occurrence. Conventionally radiographs are used to determine root canal anatomy, which is a 2dimensional representation of a 3-dimensional object. Diagnostic methods like spiral computerized tomography where a 3 dimensional data is acquired are useful to determine complex morphology. This case report presents the management of a maxillary first molar with two disto buccal root canals confirmed with the aid of computed tomography along with the conventional radiographic method. Computed Tomography scan slices revealed two separate distobuccal canals at the coronal 3rd of the root. The second distobuccal canal was missing in the middle and apical 3rd indicating; it might have joined the distobuccal canal at the middle 3rd area.

Case Report: Permanent Maxillary First Molar with Two Roots and Two Canals: A Rare Case Report
Abstract: Human maxillary first molars are usually considered as three-rooted teeth with four root canals for the presence of a second canal in the Mesio Buccal root (MB2). In addition, lateral ramifications and apical delta of the root canal system may frequently occur, increasing the probability of leaving untreated spaces after the root canal therapy. A thorough knowledge of root canal mor...
متن کاملAn Unusual Maxillary Molar with Four Roots and Four Buccal Canals Confirmed with the Aid of Spiral Computed Tomography: A Case Report
This case report describes an endodontically managed maxillary first molar with an unusual morphology of five canals. Maxillary first molar has one of the most complex root and canal anatomy. The greatest variations observed are the presence of two canals in the mesiobuccal root of maxillary molar, canals in the furcation area and the presence of lateral and accessory canals. The incidence of t...
متن کاملMaxillary first molar with three mesiobuccal canals confirmed with spiral computer tomography
Anatomic variations in root canal morphology have become easier to detect with the rapid advancements in clinical and diagnostic aids. Also an increased awareness of unusual anatomic morphology and a better understanding of the root canal system guides the clinician in diagnosis and treatment of such variations in order to achieve a successful endodontic outcome. Mesiobuccal root of first maxil...
متن کاملEndodontic Management of a Maxillary First Molar with Two Palatal Canals and a Single Buccal Canal: A Case Report
Thorough knowledge of root canal morphology is essential for the endodontic therapy. There are rare variations in canal number and configuration in maxillary molars, which could affect treatment outcome. This paper presents the endodontic management of a maxillary first molar with two palatal canals in one root (Vertucci type IV) and a single buccal canal. In this paper cone-beam computed tomog...
متن کاملA rare occurrence of bilateral C-shaped roots in mandibular first and second premolars diagnosed with the aid of spiral computed tomography
The C-shaped canal system is an anatomical variation mostly seen in mandibular second molars, although it can also occur in maxillary and other mandibular molars. Such variation in the root canal anatomy is uncommon in mandibular first premolars and very rare in mandibular second premolars. The C-shaped canal is so named for the cross-sectional morphology of the root and root canal. The main an...
